This research paper examines the relationship between history teaching, citizenship education and the effect these subjects may have on a student’s notion of national identity, in particular how history education helps shape their perceptions of a British identity. History and citizenship education are both utilised as conduits to increase a sense of a national identity and civic engagement, nation building is strongly affiliated with national history but does history teaching have an impact on students’ perceptions of national identity?
