Abstract
In 1884 the Revd Samuel and Henrietta Barnett founded Toynbee Hall, the university
settlement situated among the notorious slums of London’s East End, in memory of
their friend, Arnold Toynbee, the Oxford economic historian. Though the nineteenth
century had witnessed the foundation of various religious missions to proselytize the
heathen masses of the metropolis, the Barnetts’ new settlement on the Commercial
Road, Whitechapel had a far more radical vision
