Abstract
The reactivity and reaction mechanisms of sulfonyl compounds are reviewed. Particular attention is paid to the reactions of 1,2-thiazetidine-1,1-dioxides, β-sultams, a new class of reactive sulfonamides. Aspects of the hydrolysis reactions of these compounds, including their reactive intermediates, is discussed and their potential as novel enzyme inhibitors described.
