Abstract

It IOK..l Rt"'I'\.ll •• in
midwifery is widely recognised with the
move towards a profession that is evidence
based. (Sandall, 1998). The foundations for
policies, procedures and guidelines have
mainly arisen from quantitative research,
especially in the form of randomised controlled
trials (RCTs) (NHS, 1996). The
HS Executive in 1996 stated that only
recommendations based on RCTs should
be used in contract setting (NHS, 1996).
