In 2008, The University of Huddersfield built the world's longest model of DNA. It was 1118 base pairs long and was part of the human insulin gene. Over 150 participants from sixth forms and the university took part and the model was built in 57 minutes. The record was adjudicated by the Yorkshire umpire Dickie Bird and certified by Guinness World Records.
The report of the event and supporting documents are held in this archive.
In 2023/24 the organiser Dr. Jeremy Hopwood obtained a set of recollections of the event from some of the participants and these are also available in the archive.
