MacDonald, Juliet (2015) Standing for the Fallen. [Artefact]
Abstract

This is a series of eight drawings/collages that were shown in the exhibition Thought Positions in Sculpture at Huddersfield Art Gallery from Friday 16 October 2015 to Saturday 09 January 2016.

The works are a response to the Leeds War Memorial created by Henry Charles Fehr in 1922. The figure of Victory, that once stood at the top, was removed from the memorial because of concerns for safety once cracks started appearing in its base. Now only the Head of Victory survives in the Leeds Art Gallery collection. These collages use photographs of the memorial, press cuttings and sections of letters from bereaved relatives asking for tickets to attend the unveiling of the war memorial.

Materials are pencil, digitally printed paper, PVA, household paint and MDF.
