In 2010 I became aware of a project to recycle discarded sleeping bags, left over from music festivals. The sleeping bags are then washed, repaired where necessary and given to people that have no home or wish to have no home; the project is critical during the UK winter months. In such problematic and sensitive circumstances I became interested in how a sleeping bag may support individual identity and dignity. The work presented for Bite Size is a prototype sleeping bag for someone without a home and makes reference to The Hunt of the Unicorn Tapestries dating from 1495–1505. Through the intricacies of embroidery I wanted to dwell upon the notion of personal care and to give to those without a home some personal elegance through a unique gift.
The Hunt was presented at Bite Size, an exhibition to mark 15 years of collaboration between the UK and Japan through the University for the Creative Arts (UCA), curated by Professor Lesley Millar MBE and presented at the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation in London, Gallery Gallery in Kyoto and Nagova University of the Arts in Tokyo.
