Abstract

This article suggests a way in which performance magic practitioners can look at the presentation of magic as mystery entertainment and how an audience might read these performances and ultimately construct meaning from them. Through an examination of presence and an understanding of an audiences’ collective cosmology, we can see a tension between the meaningless and meaningful. This article suggests four modes within the performance of an effect that generate meaning within magic.
