Abstract

This paper discusses the selection of tools in milling operations. To carry out this research, it has been developed an expert system hinged on numerical methods. The knowledge base is given by limitations in process variables, which let us to define the allowablecutting parameter space. The mentioned process variables are, instabilities due to tool-work-pieceinteraction, knowing as chatter vibration, and the poweravailable in the spindle motor. Then, a tool cost model iscontrived. It is used to choose the suitable cutting tool, among a known set of candidate available cutters, and to obtain the appropriate cutting parameters, which arethe expert system outputs. An example is presented toillustrate the method.
