Abstract

We are constantly warned of the risk of skin cancer due to exposure to ultra-violet (UV) light from the Sun. There are about 46 000 new cases of skin cancer in the UK every year, causing about 2000 deaths. The incidence of skin cancer has increased by 12% in males from 1992-8, but less so in females. Children are particularly susceptible to skin cancer. This article focuses on the extent to which consumers can be confident that children's clothing provides protection.
