Abstract

This paper is devoted to the research into the difference patterns of associative meanings and the reasons between English and Chinese by exploring the words for plants and animals as an example. It points out that difference in associative meanings between English and Chinese is, to a large extent, a reflection of difference in environment, social customs, history and culture. Knowledge of difference between two cultures as well as languages is of great significance in language learning and teaching. It is especially a great help for those constantly involved in intercultural communications.
