In On Literature (2006) Umberto Eco discusses ‘totemic objects’ and symbols, and how archetypal imagery can ‘tell us what we have to believe in’. Stansbie’s filmic narratives contain descriptions of significant emblems and environments, and when such fictional objects are created in material form they can become an elaborate frame with which to view the original film.
Totemic objects uses Stansbie’s Spitfire Beach (2010) film to create objects stemming from its narrative, and the films presence within the exhibition sets up a potential dialogue between the screen and space.
