Abstract

This paper explores literacy traditions within the lives of three families. The
narrative accounts of family members from three generations provided a
retrospective view. I drew on my experiences as a teacher working with young
children and their parents. The narratives of grandparents, parents and of three
children form the core of the study. The role of family literacy is described; it
is positioned in sharp relief alongside schooled literacy.
