The Narrative Construction of Self in an Ageing, Athletic Body

Cassandra Phoenix is a Lecturer in Qualitative Research at the University of Exeter . Her current research includes examining young athlete’s perceptions of self-ageing; the construction and anticipated (re)construction of emerging body-self relationships over time; the ways in which sporting bodies are ‘aged’ by their sub-culture. Andrew C. Sparkes is Professor of Social Theory and Director of the Qualitative Research Unit in the School of Sport and Health Sciences at the University of Exeter . His research interests are eclectic and include: performing bodies, identities and selves; interrupted body projects and the narrative construction of self; the lives of marginalized individuals and groups; and sporting auto/biographies. His most recent book published in 2002 by Human Kinetics Press, explores new forms of representation in the social sciences and is entitled Telling Tales in Sport and Physical Activity: A Qualitative Journey .
