Abstract

Mental illnesses such as Depression and Anxiety are socially, psychologically and biologically disabling; drastically affecting a person’s quality of life. Whilst there have been considerable improvements over the last half a century to tackle mental health challenges, prominent evidence shows that a high percentage of people affected by mental illness still experience stigma and discrimination. Attitude’s and beliefs towards mental health problems have been shaped by stereotyped societal and cultural perceptions, with many believing that those affected are emotionally unstable, mentally incapable and dangerous. A critical review of current research shows that the best way to challenge stereotypes is through first-hand contact with people who have mental illnesses. This research projects explores a combination of immersive and applied theatre techniques as an open platform for communication and education; utilising my own first-hand experience of Depression and Anxiety.
