I Need Some Meaning I Can Memorise (The Invisible Pull)

Gander’s installation for Documenta 13, Kassel, Germany entitled ‘Airflow-velocity Study…’ was the central artwork of the Kunsthalle Fridericianum in this world-leading exhibition. The entrance of the gallery was completely devoted to the large, empty atriums of Gander’s installation. With ‘Airflow-velocity Study…’ there is nothing for the viewer to see – only a prevailing breeze that is intended to draw viewers into the space. Despite its minimalist sensibility, the work necessitated five years of expensive engineering to develop - industrial design being a key tool in the realisation of the work. ‘Airflow-velocity Study…’ turns on a polemic that challenges the pervading tendency to produce artworks that can easily be commodified - interrogating value, function, and cost within contemporary art by making an installation out of an ephemeral experience.
