You Are the Journey

You Are the Journey was an Arts Council funded award to produce an artwork on the front of the Hythe Ferry Ten Journey ticket. The project emerged through working with commuters who make the 20-minute ferry journey across Southampton Water from Hythe to Southampton Quay. Through the re-design of the Hythe Ferry Ticket, it become a focus for reflection, combining the functionality of the ticket with an interactive public artwork.

The final outcome invited passengers to make written responses to their journey on the front of their ticket. Some of the lines of text were printed onto subsequent ferry tickets, on sale at the Hythe ticket office, forming an ephemeral stream of words in the spaces where the tickets are punched.

Working with the painter R.A.Webb as Barber & Webb, the collaboration has enbaled the artists to share skills in graphic design and print production and learn about working with the media. White Horse ferries continue to use the artists design on their current Hythe Ferry Ten Journey Tickets.
