Abstract

The plots of fictions that focus on kidnap by Gypsies may be read as a manifestation of cultural anxieties about identity, certainty about people’s origins, and the stability of social categories which ostensibly offered the promise of knowledge and control. Kidnaps and assimilations make it difficult to locate people in their ‘proper’ place and impossible to know who and where the other is.
