Notes: This is a Consortium funded project - examining teaching and learning in range of professional contexts, in relation to issues relating to inclusion. Students to explore what inclusion really means in educational environments.
We cannot help but be political beings in our professional lives, by opting not to engage in political issues is a political statement in itself.
Most people acknowledge that ‘inclusion’ is a positive thing. We insist that students have an understanding of what is notionally accepted as inclusion to then explore differing perspectives of the tensions and barriers, as well as developing knowledge of the political and ideological history to understand present day discrimination and of what this means in practice.
This can be uncomfortable and can place practitioners in a real professional dilemma, as clashes in values and practices are noted.
We then ask - do we all really ‘belong’ in our classrooms?
