Abstract
For much qualitative research analysis of social reality requires that we understand the ‘symbolic
world’ of those we study, that is, the meanings and interpretations that people apply to their
experiences. The researcher may start with some understanding of the phenomena, even before
finishing the collection of data, but this understanding expands during the course of the project
by continually checking data against interpretations until we are satisfied we have a full grasp of
the phenomena.
