Gavin Bryars - The Art of Sound

""What happens when visual artists think in sound, and musicians go beyond their notes?"

This is the question posed by the Royal Northern College of Music in advance of their extraordinary multi-media exhibition of music and art at Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester on Friday 4 July.  The audience will be free to explore the gallery's many interconnecting spaces, creating a unique journey through a rolling programme of art and music.

Art of Sound: Sound of Art is a programme of 18 installations which include a special performance of Gavin Bryars' The Sinking of the Titanic.  The piece, which was conceived as a work of conceptual art, has a flexible duration and this performance will be extended to 2 hours and 40 minutes, the length of time which it took for the unsinkable liner to go down.  Another interesting feature will be the use of an ice sculpture which, as it melts, will be recorded, amplified and manipulated to create an additional sound source.
