Abstract
Substrate-solid interactions may provide a better estimate of substrate-enzyme interactions than do substrate-solvent interactions. The free-energy of transfer of a methylene group from water to a non-polar solid is −2.0 kcal mol−1 which is more favourable than previous estimates of the binding energy of this group
