Abstract: | 10’32 ‘Noumena’ was a term used by Kant to refer to the things that underlie our experience both of the physical world an of our own mental states (called by him the phenomena of outer and inner sense) and that are not themselves objects of possible experience. This work is in a number of short discrete sections that play continuously. The sections alternate between 'inner' and 'outer' sense and are clearly delineated by the playing techniques that the cellist is called on to produce. The work was commissioned by Sonic Arts Network for Judith Mitchell with funds from the Arts Council of Great Britain. |
