Abstract

This short article is an encyclopaedic style entry for the journal Philosophy of Photography. It covers the main historical aspects of the rise of the terminology, how it came to use and the applications of the term within photographic practice Further it brings to light the different aspects of analogue based practice and silver halide crystals and compares with the digital equivalent of a pixel. It argues that the transition from analogue to digital practices has bought about varying degrees of processes however the photograph remains in a state of immanence with changes happening from as much within the camera as with the compression of the image later on.
