Abstract

Of the range of time-frequency methods of analysis, the Wigner-Ville Distribution (WVD) is probably the most popular. This paper explores the capabilities of the WVD, the pseudo-WVD and the smoothed-pseudo-WVD in the analysis of short duration transients embedded in noisy data. Transient components are often found in vibration data from machinery which is suffering impacting faults such as gear damage, fuel injector problems and mechanical looseness. The paper concludes that the WVD provides a powerful tool in the detection and diagnosis of impactive faults.
