Peebles, David (2004) Distortions of perceptual judgement in diagrammatic representations. In: Proceedings of the 26th Annual Conference of the Cognitive Science Society, 5-7th August 2004, Chicago.
Abstract

This paper presents an experimental analysis of problem solving interactions with three different but equivalent diagram types,
one of which was recently developed by the UK Home Office to display police performance data to the public. This paper is
novel and important because it reveals that the type of diagram used significantly affects the speed and accuracy of users’
problem interactions and that in certain circumstances, the Home Office diagram was not optimal for people to use.
