The following thesis and the accompanying portfolio of compositions represent two recent starnds of musical interest: ephemerality and the role of notation. Throughout the thesis I explicate the various ways I ahve engaged with these concerns and their application in my work. Additionally, I aim to situate my work within context of contemporary compositional reactices as a way of showing both origins of influence and ways in which my own work extends/ expands on these influences. The thesis will address issue regarding the materiality impermanency of scores, documentation, interpersonal relationships, performative situations, and the performer/ notation interface.
