The Dams Raid was a defining moment to which historians repeatedly return; it has also become an evolving cultural phenomenon in which material is repeatedly recycled in works that form a literary genre, distinct from history. The cult centres on a yearning to connect with the flow between then and now, in which ‘then’ is substantially constructed.
