TQEF Project 3b:
Building Creative Capacity in Staff and Students

International Work

Four staff members from the Drama Division delivered a ground-breaking week-long creativity workshop at the National University of Mexico this year.

Entitled ‘Writing the Body, Dancing The Mind’ the workshop used Movement Improvisation and Creative Writing to develop an understanding of Creative Principles. The work is a development of research into creative practice and creative teaching pioneered in the Drama Division in the last few years and shared with the wider University community through a TQEF-funded staff development project.

30 Mexican Students and Arts Professionals worked with John Britton and Hilary Elliott each morning, developing psychophysical and improvisational approaches to understanding their creative capacity. Each afternoon the same students worked with Dr Deborah Middleton and Tim Moss to further develop and structure that capacity through Creative Writing.

The week started with an improvised performance by John Britton and Hilary Elliott (‘Spontaneous Combustion #30’) and concluded with a sharing of written and physical performance work by the students.

This extraordinary collaboration develops a long-standing research relationship between Dr Middleton and Mexican practitioner Nicolas Nunez and will form the template for further national and international dissemination of the division’s research into creative practice.
