Abstract

This article examines the sequence of charters granted by the crown to Jersey, sometimes alone and sometimes in conjunction with Guernsey. It considers the changing nature of the liberties granted and their implications for the status of the island's community. It also discussed the context for each such grant and the ways in which the charters illuminate the islands' histories.
