Abstract

Aims: We hope to build on the momentum of successful local, national and international impacts of Crafting the Community through developing more established ventures and scale up our current ‘volunteering’ within the new undergraduate BA/BSc Textiles with Surface Design degree course. We hope to initiate opportunities to enable students to lead research enquiry and bring their experience and enthusiasm into a range of community contexts, while engaging diverse communities in developing textile skills. Through fostering a culture of entrepreneurship we hope to empower student confidence through volunteering. We hope to steer a new initiative to build clearer and more robust theoretical frameworks to harness students’ intuitive, hands on enquiry within the Textile Crafts practice in community contexts.
Crafting the Community III will employ a Social Enterprise Research Nexus through the integration of students into future staff research and professional practice proposals and bids concerning Textile Art and Craft in the social realm.

Intentions: This volunteering based project supports the school learning and teaching strategies through evaluating and disseminating teaching and learning initiatives and student’s success as practitioners. It also highlights ADA pedagogy through a portfolio of key papers, conference and publications presented at venues in the UK and abroad.

Discussion points: Pedagogical approaches to empathetic politics and the politics of cloth.
