Burke, Jane and Stone, Graham (2014) Collection Management Workflows: The Cart versus the Horse. In: Electronic Resources & Libraries 2014, 16-19 March 2014, AT&T Conference Center Austin, Texas. (Unpublished)
Abstract

As new collection management systems are emerging, they hold the promise of increased efficiency through new workflows. Both libraries and solution providers face immense challenges in order to actualize this possibility. Libraries must examine their existing workflows and how they evolved. Systems suppliers need to thoroughly understand what libraries are trying to achieve in order to program the best workflow solution.

Previously, library workflows were determined by their ILS. As library workflows have evolved, their processes need to be analyzed. What workflows need to be kept intact, if any? With the new, advanced model of collection management, now is the time to disrupt workflows. In order to best assess and improve current systems what should come first, the cart or the horse?

This program will feature Graham Stone from the University of Huddersfield, as part of the JISC Library Systems Programme, they performed an intensive study of their current workflows. Graham Stone will present a synopsis of their findings. Along with Jane Burke from ProQuest, they will present recommendations for future workflows and describe how the new Intota Assessment system is enabling more efficient solutions.
