Abstract
Based on his continuing research, this talk will describe the sorts of tools and woods that were available to early English viol makers. Although it is likely that such a range would be similar to what was available at other times and in other countries, this should not be assumed, evidence is required. The nature of the evidence will be discussed; examples from 16th- and 17th-century England will be presented and compared with continental evidence.
