Details:
This chapter examines the evidence for choral practice in York, examining all York's surviving sources in detail, and building
upon the information published in the journal article in Plainsong and Medieval Music (Colton, 2003).
Context:
The chapter is the first published overall examination of musical sources from late medieval York, and reflects the book's
emphasis on using a variety of original documents (churchwardens' accounts, wills, music manuscripts) in order to explore
liturgical practice within the city. The chapter is illustrated with excerpts from the music transcribed from the original sources for
this publication, and which did not at the time of publication appear elsewhere, such as a four-part Kyrie from the York Masses
(c.1500).
