Abstract
This article critically reviews previous attempts to raise the age of compulsory participation in education to 18. It revisits the proposals of the 1918 and 1944 Education Acts to introduce Day Continuation Schools and County Colleges, and compares and contrasts these ultimately unsuccesful initiatives with the current proposal to introduce compulsory participation to 18.
