This issue represents something of a hybrid publication for the British Journal of Social Work. While all papers published in this issue were submitted to the journal in the usual way, five were written following an initiative on social work research promoted by the Joint University Council Social Work Education Committee. Once these papers had been reviewed and accepted for publication, the editors consulted with JUCSWEC representatives and agreed to publish them in the same volume of the journal, inviting one of their members, Professor Paul Bywaters, to contribute to this Editorial by introducing these papers. These comprise the second half of the substantive papers in this issue.
