Abstract

The clinical governance support team was commissioned by the assistant director of nursing and clinical risk to undertake an audit of the clinical management plans used by the non-medical prescribers within a mental health NHS trust.

This report is the second stage of the non-medical prescribing evaluation process undertaken by this trust. The first stage was reported in Clibbens et al (2008), following implementation of a questionnaire survey with qualified non-medical prescribers in the trust.
For this second stage of the evaluation of non-medical prescribing in the trust, each nonmedical prescriber was asked to provide five clinical management plans, giving a total of 24 plans, which were audited against the standards within the Trust Framework for Nonmedical Prescribing (April 2007).

The audit’s main conclusion is that nonmedical supplementary prescribers within the trust using a clinical management plan are overall adhering to the standards set out in the Trust Framework.
